Reflections While Preparing for the 2nd Dan Exam

I began my Aikido journey in 2019 and achieved my shodan in 2021. Over three years have passed since that milestone, and this time has been a period of growth and discovery. When I first started practicing, I struggled with movements that felt foreign and unnatural. It became clear that understanding something with my mind didn’t mean my body would automatically follow. I was unknowingly applying strength in ways that created stiffness rather than fluidity. Recognizing this was humbling and marked the beginning of my focus on refining my practice.

While preparing for this 2nd dan exam, I had the opportunity to participate in the Year-End Seminar with Yamashima Takeshi Shihan, 8th Dan. This was my fourth time attending a seminar under his guidance, but this experience was unique. Observing the senior aikidokas around me, I noticed how each interpreted his teachings in their own way. Yet, despite their individual approaches, they all demonstrated exceptional sensitivity—a heightened sense of awareness that brought their practice to life. This resonated deeply with me, as the concept of sensitivity has been a recurring theme at my dojo. My dojocho has often emphasized its importance in cultivating a deeper understanding of Aikido.

In a recent training session, I had a moment of clarity. My dojocho’s words on sensitivity, which I had heard countless times before, suddenly clicked. I realized that simply repeating techniques warms up the body and primes it for receptivity. However, true improvement lies in going beyond the surface, in truly sensing and connecting—not only with my own movements but also with my partner. To progress further, I need to refine my awareness: to feel where unnecessary strength originates, align my movements with my core, and maintain a seamless connection with my partner.

This realization reminded me of how training is like polishing a rough stone. With each session, the layers of complexity in Aikido become a little clearer. As my dojocho often says, the nuances are endless, and embracing them is what makes this journey so fulfilling. My practice is now focused on becoming more sensitive to these nuances, moving with awareness, and connecting more deeply—not just mechanically but with intention.

Looking back, I see how far I’ve come since I first stepped onto the mat in 2019. Yet, I also know how far I still have to go. I am grateful for this opportunity to take the 2nd dan exam and to continue on this path with the guidance of my teachers, seniors, and peers. Aikido is not just a martial art to me; it is a journey of learning, connecting, and growing—both with myself and with others. Thank you for allowing me to reflect on this process and to pursue greater understanding through this exam.
